Recycled Roof Slates

What is slate? Slate is a fine-grained, clay that has been compressed and heated over millions of years. Slate has been used for roofing, flooring, and flagging because of its durability and attractive appearance. Slate performs well for roofing because it can be cut into thin sheets, absorbs minimal moisture, and stands up well in contact with freezing water. Did you know that most roofing slate that has been used on houses in the last hundred years has come from slate belts in Vermont and New York State ? When applied to a roof, slate has a life expectancy of about 125 years. Some varieties of slate from Virginia or Pennsylvania could last for 200 years!
